Common Automatic Watch Problems and How to Solve Them

Common Automatic Watch Problems and How to Solve Them

Owning and wearing an automatic watch brings great joy, but like any mechanical device, occasional issues can arise.

At Rotary Watches, we believe that understanding these common problems helps you enjoy your timepiece with confidence and keeps it performing at its best for many years to come.

Most issues with automatic watches are straightforward to identify and resolve with simple care or timely professional attention.

Here’s a practical guide to the most frequent problems encountered with automatic watches and how to address them effectively.

The Watch Has Stopped Running

One of the most common complaints is that the watch has stopped running. This usually happens when the watch has not been worn for a few days and the power reserve has run down. Rotary automatic watches typically have around 40 hours of power reserve.

The solution is simple: gently wind the crown clockwise 20-30 times to provide power into the mainspring, then set the time and date. Wearing the watch regularly is the best prevention, as your natural wrist movements keep the rotor spinning and the mainspring charged. For those who rotate several watches, a watch winder can be a convenient way to keep an automatic watch running between wears.

Time Accuracy

Another potential issue is poor accuracy, where the watch gains or loses several seconds per day. Mechanical watches are not as exact as quartz watches, so a small daily variation is normal for mechanical movements, but larger inconsistencies can result from position, temperature changes, magnetism, or the need for movement service.

If your Rotary watch seems consistently inaccurate, first avoid storing it near strong magnets such as phone cases or speakers. Extreme heat or cold should also be avoided, as they can affect the lubricants inside.

A professional service every 3–5 years, including cleaning, lubrication, and regulation, can help restore reliable performance.

Incorrect Date Display

Date complications can sometimes cause concern, especially when the date jumps incorrectly or gets stuck. This often occurs if the crown is used to set the date during the sensitive hours between approximately 9 PM and 3 AM, when the mechanism is engaged.

To prevent this, always set the date during daytime hours. If the date has already misaligned, gently advance the time through 24 hours until it corrects itself. Patience and correct handling avoid most date-related issues.

If the date does not correct itself or the crown feels resistant, do not force it. Contact our service team for advice.

Condensation In The Case

Condensation or fogging inside the crystal is a clear sign that moisture has entered the watch. This can happen if the crown was not fully pushed in or screwed down, depending on the model, before water exposure or if the gaskets have worn over time.

If you notice condensation under the glass, stop wearing the watch and contact our service team as soon as possible. Even if the fogging disappears, moisture may remain inside the case and can damage the movement if left untreated.

Concerning Noises

Unusual Sounds

Unusual noises, such as rattling or ticking that sounds different from normal, may indicate that the rotor is loose or that a service is required.

While Rotary watches are built with robust movements, any new or concerning sounds warrant a check by an authorised service centre.

Difficulty operating the crown

Similarly, a stiff or difficult-to-operate crown is often resolved by ensuring it is fully unscrewed before use and properly screwed down afterwards.

Servicing

For the best long-term performance, professional servicing remains the most important solution for many issues. Rotary recommends servicing every 3–5 years to clean the movement, replace worn parts, and refresh the lubricants. This not only solves existing problems but also prevents future ones.

All Rotary automatic watches are backed by a 2-year guarantee, extendable to 3 years with online registration, and our service team is ready to support you.

By following simple daily care habits; wearing your watch regularly or using a watch winder, avoiding extreme conditions, and respecting water resistance, most common problems can be prevented altogether.

If you’re experiencing any issues with your Rotary watch, please contact our customer service or an authorised service centre. With the right care, your automatic watch will continue delivering smooth performance for many years to come.
