Understanding Watch Water Resistance Ratings
When choosing a timepiece, water resistance is a key consideration - especially if you lead an active lifestyle or enjoy water-based activities. But what do the various water resistance ratings actually mean? At Rotary Watches, we build timepieces designed to suit a range of requirements, from everyday and formal wear to adventure-ready dive watches like the Seamatic collection. Let’s take a look at the water resistance ratings to help you choose the right watch for your needs.
What is Water Resistance?
Water resistance indicates how well a watch can withstand exposure to moisture, but it doesn’t mean the watch is completely waterproof. Each rating is tested under controlled conditions, and real-world use - such as temperature changes and water pressure from movement - can affect a watch’s actual resistance.
Understanding the Ratings
30M (3ATM) Splash-Resistant: Watches with a 30M rating, such as many of our classic dress watches, can handle everyday splashes from rain or hand washing but should not be submerged in water.
50M (5ATM) Suitable for Light Water Exposure: Engineered to withstand moderate water exposure, from swimming in a pool to a sudden downpour.
100M (10ATM) Ideal for Swimming and Snorkeling: A 100M-rated Rotary watch is suitable for swimming and snorkeling but not high-pressure activities like diving.
Diving Watches Built for the Depths: Professional diving watches exceed 200M, ensuring they can handle deep-sea pressure. Our Seamatic collection is engineered for 300M water resistance for optimal durability.
Maintaining Your Watch’s Water Resistance
-
Regular Servicing: Seals and gaskets can degrade over time, so we recommend professional servicing.
-
Avoid Hot Water: Heat can cause seals to expand, compromising water resistance.
-
Ensure the Crown is Secure: If your watch has a screw-down crown, always check that it is fully tightened before water exposure.
-
Rinse After Saltwater Use: If your watch has been in seawater, rinse it with fresh water to prevent corrosion.
